How To Install Diamond Plate Trim and Molding

If you want to add a modern industrial vibe to your home or business, diamond plate is your new best friend! This sleek, shiny, and attractive accent will add instant texture and flair to any room. That said, if you've never used this kind of product before, you're probably wondering how to install diamond plate trim and molding. You'll be happy to hear that the installation process is quick and painless. Below, we’ve put together a step-by-step guide to the diamond plate installation process. Follow these tips, and you'll be golden!

Take Measurements

To start, you'll need to measure the surface you plan to install diamond plate on. Using a tape measure, determine the length and width. You'll want to write down your measurements in both inches and feet—some diamond plate providers use the former, and others use the latter to describe the size of their products.

Choose Your Diamond Plate

Now that you have your measurements, you can start your search for the perfect diamond plate! All diamond plate will have the same general look—a raised diamond pattern on a thin sheet of metal or plastic. However, the size, thickness, color, and material of diamond plate can vary.

Most cosmetic diamond plate is .025 gauge, which is 1/32" thick. This plate is thin enough that you can roll it up for easy transport and storage, but durable enough to tolerate minor wear and tear. If you need something sturdier, other thicknesses are also available. In terms of material, we recommend aluminum, which is decently sturdy and has a beautiful shine.

Color-wise, you have a lot of choices. There's the traditional silver color, white, red, black, gunmetal gray, chrome, glacier gray, and more. Diamond plate is paintable, so you can technically make it any color you want, but keep in mind that painting plate is a bit more complicated than painting your walls. As for size, that depends entirely on the surface you’re installing the plate on.

If you're having trouble finding what you need, don't hesitate to reach out to a diamond plate expert. They'll help you find the right diamond plate products for your renovation.

One last thing to keep in mind is that you should order 10% more material than you need. This way, you're covered if your measurements were off or if you accidentally damage the diamond plate during installation.

Consider Other Accessories

Keep in mind that trim and molding won't cover the corners of walls. Usually, the space left behind isn't too noticeable, but if you'd prefer a smoother transition, you can use diamond plate corner guards to bridge the gap. You can also purchase other diamond plate accessories, like panels, outlet and switch covers, kick guards, and ceiling tiles to tie the look of your room together.

Prep the Surface

Now that you've placed your order, you need to play the waiting game until your diamond plate arrives. But you don't have to spend this time aimlessly pacing around. Instead, you can use it to prep your surface for installation.

Your surface needs to be clean and dry before you install your diamond plate trim or molding. Otherwise, the diamond plate won't adhere correctly. If your surface is glossy or smooth, we recommend roughing it up with some sandpaper first. Otherwise, you can move right on to the cleaning phase.

So, what should you clean your surface with? It depends. For plasterboard and wood, you can use warm, soapy water and a cloth. If you're installing on something metal (like a recreational vehicle), use a commercial cleaner, a mixture of baking soda and water, or a small amount of rubbing alcohol. Once you're done cleaning, let the surface dry. Depending on the material, this can take from a few hours to a day or two.

Cut and Dry Fit

Your diamond plate product is here! Unpack it and you can start installing. The best way to unbox your diamond plate is to place the box on its side and open it on one end. Before removing the diamond plate, slip on a pair of thick gloves for safety. Carefully pull out the sheets and unroll them. The edges of the sheets are incredibly sharp, so take your time and don’t rush. Once the sheets are out, you may want to gently back roll them to improve box memory, but this step isn’t necessary. If you decide to back roll, note that the sheets crimp easily and that you should proceed with caution. Sheets will be slightly bent after removal. There’s no way to flatten them completely, but rest assured, they’ll look nice and smooth once installed.

The first thing you'll want to do after your diamond plate is unboxed is dry fit it, which involves holding it up to the surface without any glue. The dry fit will help you determine where you need to trim your diamond plate. If the plate is too big, you'll need to cut it down before you can install it. You can use 18-gauge hand shears to make long, clean cuts and tin snips for small, short cuts. When using these tools, wear thick gloves to protect your hands. Cut carefully, as you don't want to remove too much.

Install

There are a few ways to install diamond plate. One option is to use heavy-duty construction glue, which you can pick up at your local hardware store. Just spread the glue generously on the back of the diamond plate and then press it onto the surface until it holds firm. Another option is to use FRP adhesive, which you apply to the back of the sheet just like the construction adhesive. A third option is double-sided foam adhesive tape. Stick the tape to the back of the sheet and then press on to the wall or other surface. Finally, you can use self-tapping screws. Use a ¼" diameter drill bit to drill screws ½" from the edge and 10” apart evenly across the edges. However, take care not to overtighten the screws, as this can dimple the material. Screws are arguably the sturdiest diamond plate installation method.

Those are our tips on how to install diamond plate trim and molding. Follow these instructions to install your diamond plate quickly, easily, and flawlessly.
